My Experience with Prolon
Disclaimer: I am (obviously) not a doctor and advise you to do your own research before embarking on an experience like this!
I first learned about Prolon through listening to Dr. Valter Longo (Prolon’s creator) on Dr. Mark Hyman’s podcast. I was immediately intrigued by the long term health benefits and looked into the program further. Then, I saw it shared through the goop show where Gwyneth Paltrow tried it and in 5 days, her biological age dropped about two years. The first time I tried it was last year and transparently for me I think I was too newly postpartum. It made me a little anxious so I waited to feel 100% mentally and physically to try it again (this, for me, is about 18 months postpartum). Here is my experience!
Day 1
I’m excited! I’ve been craving a reset for a while and it’s been a year since I tried Prolon the first time. Since I’ve done it before, I know all the tips:
you can add a little spice to your soups
make the soups with double the water so they last longer
start eating later in the day so that the rest of the day is easier
space out the meals the way you want to eat (ex: on day 1 I save the choco crisp bar for after the kids go to bed since I usually like chocolate for dessert)
drink a ton of water - I add lemon
you can add stevia to your black coffee (8 oz) - I also added a little cinnamon
warm up the bar for 15 seconds in the microwave and top with flakey sea salt
listen to Dr. Longo on as many podcasts as possible - you’ll be thinking to yourself how would I not do this after listening, it’s a no brainer!
I actually find the food tastes pretty good and there is a decent amount on day 1!
Day 2
I woke up a little more irritable today which is not ideal but the exciting part about Day 2 is that you are entering the autophagy state which means you are cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. This is also the beginning of the fat-burning state. I’m going to try and wait until noon to start my food and so I enjoyed a cup of black coffee and the beginning of my “L-Drink.” I did a low impact Peloton this morning because I like to keep a little bit of movement in my journey.
Day 3
I went to sleep before 8PM last night and slept straight until 5AM! I woke up with a ton of energy and didn’t feel hungry at all. Today I decided to do a chill pilates flow rather than another low impact ride since I found I was a bit hungry and irritable yesterday. But so far, I am totally feeling the energy and alertness and focus that people talk about. Yay! And the good news is, as of noon I am halfway there! Since Day 3 is notoriously the hardest with the least amount of food, I am going to wait until 1PM to start eating (did 12PM yesterday). That way I can eat more in a shorter window (to me, this is easier…the minute I start eating I get hungrier). What’s exciting me and motivating me today: on day 3 cellular clean-up and autophagy are in full swing, flushing out old, worn-out intracellular components and cellular debris.
Day 4
I felt super energetic all day yesterday so I decided to do another low impact Peloton ride this morning before a walk with friends. I’m definitely a little hungry but trying to wait until noon to eat my bar! Definitely planning to warm up it and add a little flakey sea salt to it since I learned that tip yesterday and it was amazing! I am excited to start eating my regular healthy food again but the nice thing is, as of tonight I’m 80% done! My energy is really good and I’m not irritable at all.
Day 5
Woo hoo! Last day. It’s felt like a long 5 days but I feel great. So excited to get back into my healthy routine tomorrow.
Now to your Q&A - here are the top 5 questions I was asked:
1) Will your husband do it with you?
Definitely not lol.
2) Doing it again soon?
Yes! I’m thinking about doing it again in November before we go to Hawaiii.
3) Are you doing IMF regularly?
I usually stop eating at 7PM and have a collagen coffee at 7AM which is technically 12 hours! I don’t like to do more than that, since I have read that there are diminishing returns and longer can actually have negative consequences.
4) Enough quantity of food?
Enough to survive, yes lol. However you likely won’t feel full (in my experience).
5) Fasting while pregnant/BF?
Definitely not.
