What I Learned From a Month Without Alcohol
When I found out what our life would look like in May / early June (more info here) I decided that I would avoid alcohol so that I could feel my absolute best for my kids everyday and remain really clear headed and focused on supporting my family and have endurance to keep my business going while really stepping up as a mom and wife. I don’t drink a lot (my ABSOLUTE max is 3 drinks and that’s for incredibly special occasions like a wedding or bachelorette party). My usual wine intake is around 3-4 glasses a week, usually on the weekend. I love cooking with a glass of wine and I love going out for a margarita with my friends, but if there something I despise more than anything, it is being hungover. With all of the latest research on alcohol consumption and it’s effect on your brain health as well as the sober curious movement, I’ve become more interested in reducing my alcohol consumption. I thought this period of time would be a good experiment and I’m glad I tried it! I’m going to outline some of the things I noticed in case you’re curious too.
(reminder, I’m not a doctor)
1) My eyes were clearer and colors were brighter. I combined this time with daily meditation (and this is a side effect I notice from meditation as well if you can believe it), and the combo really, I believe, made the world a lot more clear and vivid. Even just looking out the window right now, everything feels so bright and alive.
2) I was more patient with my kids. Bedtime was less of a struggle. I also noticed my confidence as a mom increased. I’m not sure if this is because I really had to step up into the role but it definitely helped my patience when things got rowdy (aka 10 x a day).
3) My sleep has been really consistent. I have noticed a massive effect from overconsumption in the past.
4) My stomach is flatter (sorry just the truth). I’m generally a very healthy person but when I indulge in wine a few times a week, I find my abs go into hiding. I clearly don’t have a six pack but I certainly noticed less bloat and more muscle tone without alcohol.
5) I didn’t really miss it. I actually find socializing easier without it because I have more energy. I’ve also taken years off of drinking when pregnant so I think I’m used to it.
6) No one noticed. I didn’t really tell anyone (not for any particular reason but like who cares? LOL) but not one person noticed. Keep in mind I only went out a couple of times in the last month but at dinner, I was poured a glass of wine and just didn’t drink it and at a cocktail party I just sipped on a glass of water.
7) My clothes fit better. I wouldn’t say I changed my diet or my workout routine (in fact, I’m walking less because I’m walking with P who can’t walk long distances).
8) My blood sugar is more regulated. I notice when I’m full and I really don’t desire to overeat.
9) My skin feels very glowy and hydrated.
All in all, I really enjoyed the last month or so without alcohol. That being said, I am very comfortable with my decision to enjoy wine while cooking and with dinner, and imbibe in the occasional margarita out with my girlfriends. I think if we ever go through another hard time, however, I’ll lay off the vino for a minute so I can show up as my best, strongest self for every second of every day - for my family and most importantly myself.
